Chief and Council of Norway House Cree Nation appointed a local Emergency Response Team (ERT) that has been working with Red Cross, Emergency Management and other organizations. The team has been meeting frequently and keeping Chief and Council fully informed on the forest fire threat to our community.

The ERT has established and will be providing regular updates on their Facebook page, “NHCN Emergency Response”, Local radio and NHCN App.

Chief and Council have been assured by Canada and Manitoba Conservation that the fire threat today poses no immediate threat to our community. The ongoing dry conditions however require that everyone is vigilant to ensure that no unnecessary fires are started and if a fire is seen that it is immediately reported so that it can be dealt with immediately. We are calling upon our partners in Canada and Manitoba for assistance to ensure our community is prepared for the dangers that may lie ahead as these dry conditions continue.

Cross Lake is currently being evacuated into Norway House temporarily as they are ordered to do so given the proximity of the forest fire. We welcome our neighbours and extend any assistance as required.

The EMT will be on the radio, Face book and social media outlets to ensure that you receive timely communication. We are in the process of securing more food, fuel and water to ensure that there are no shortages in our community. The situation remains fluid, but we appreciate your calm while we work through this challenging circumstance.

Chief and Council thank the Emergency Response Team for their commitment to keeping our community safe in these challenging times.
