Following a duly convened meeting of Council, at which all six (6) Councillors were present, the following decisions were made in the interest of maintaining stability, transparency, and continuity of governance within Norway House Cree Nation.
1. Appointment of Deputy Chief
Councillor Alfred Laugher has been appointed to serve as Deputy Chief and is currently the Acting Chief for the First Nation. Councillor Laugher will fulfill these responsibilities on an interim basis until the Chief of the Nation is formally confirmed and assumes office.
2. Continuity of Governance
Until the Chief of the Nation is confirmed and assumes office, the six (6) duly elected Councillors will collectively carry on the governance and day-to-day business of the First Nation, ensuring that all essential operations and decision-making processes continue without interruption.
3. Run-Off Election Process
Council has directed that a run-off election be scheduled for May 1, 2026, and that all necessary steps will be taken to prepare for it in a fair and transparent manner, including the provision of mail-in ballots.
Because there is an outstanding appeal that will confirm whether the election for Chief was tied, a run-off election may not be required. However, in accordance with the Appeal Committee’s decision, Council is proceeding with preparations to ensure that, if a run-off is necessary, it can be conducted in an orderly, fair, and timely manner.
If a run-off election is not required, members will be notified promptly. This information will also be communicated through the mail-in ballot materials and by other appropriate means.
We thank all our Norway House Cree Nation members for their continued patience, understanding, and engagement during this process.
